Picture of me and my bike, ready for departure!88kg of hardware and muscle...

...and that's without the paniers - they weigh another 10kg! How will I get that lot up and down the hills on my journey?

Well this is it - I am now travelling south, ready for the long journey back north. I spent last night doing last minute stuff like downloading a load of songs onto the mp3 player, getting a lesson on Rog's digital camera and showing him how the temperamental lawn-mower works!

Yesterday was full of messages of best wishes and good luck, recording soundbites for BBC Radio Derby and panicking about just how much work I am leaving unfinished. It was also fantastic to see the totaliser rocket past 3,000 and then on beyond 3,500. That is going to be a huge motivator for me over the coming two weeks on the road. Oh, and the other cool thing I read in my forum is that my primary school, Great Orton School, is going to be following my progress north online - fab eh!

I have also heard that Rog's cousins, Gary and Craig Bode are going to be riding the whole of Day 7 with me - from Crich up to Clitheroe - which is fantastic. Also, I may be getting more company for the Carlisle to Edinburgh leg.

The next time I sleep in my own bed I will have over 350 miles and a photo call with the Mayor of Derby behind me...can't wait!

Keep reading as I add a journal entry each day from now on and, technology permitting, start posting pictures of the sights along the way. More about how I will do this in the next installment.

Meanwhile, if you've any money left to give, get it pledged today!! Crusaid really needs your support and they are immensely grateful for the money you have donated or pledged so far. I have had a good luck card, a phone message and two e-mails from them in the last 24 hours wishing me well!
